Scoliosis – Simplified

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis backScoliosis is a curvature of the vertebral column. It may be accompanied with a rotation of the spine. Scoliosis is a permanent condition and can lead to further deformation if not managed correctly. The curvature is intensified during growth spurts, so screening in children and adolescence can aid in early diagnosis as treatment gets harder with a greater degree of variation.

Scoliosis can be classified in to two groups- structural or functional. Structural scoliosis is approximately 80% of cases. Females are affected more than males and structural scoliosis can appear in any age or be the result of a congenital defect. Functional scoliosis is the result of a pre-existing condition, such as uneven leg length, or spinal nerve compression. Functional scoliosis may occur when the spinal muscles are not balanced on either side, as in muscular dystrophy, trauma, cerebral palsy, or partial paralysis.

Early symptoms of abnormal spinal curvature include a loss of alignment between the hip and shoulder and a rotation of the spine. This can then further complicate to the ribs becoming rigid and forced in to an abnormal position. When the ribs are rotated, breathing can become difficult.

What are the treatment options?

In some cases, if the curvature is mild, pain would not be present and as such the diagnosis is often missed. Poor posture alignment, raised shoulders or a bump on one side of the back when the sufferer bends forward can be used to determine scoliosis, and an x-ray will show the degree of curvature and rotation. Treatments are usually through bracing, traction, and postural correction. Surgical treatments are sometimes required when the condition is severe, by either fusing the affected vertebrae, or by using pins and rods to correct the deviation. Unfortunately, with any of the treatment options, a return of the abnormal curvature is possible.

Can Nubax Trio help?

Nubax Trio is a back-traction devise that can be used to correct postural deviations in the spine. Treatment of scoliosis with back traction can be a lengthy process. By stretching the spinal column and aligning it with the hips and shoulders, the vertebrae is placed in its correct position. Nubax Trio uses gravity, the weight of the upper body, and leverage to apply a traction force to the back. Nubax Trio is simple to use at home to regenerate and heal the spine, whilst correcting the posture.
