What is Kyphosis and Lordosis?
Kyphosis is a condition characterised by an excessive outward curvature of the spinal column. The spine increases in convexity, developing the appearance of a ‘hunchback’. Kyphosis can occur secondary to other conditions, such as in osteoporosis, and tuberculosis in mature adults, but is often seen in adolescence due to postural error. This milder form is often fully reversible with skeletal muscle development and support, and with the rectification of incorrect posture. Severe kyphosis, from any cause, can lead to poor lung expansion and affect breathing.
Lordosis, similar to Kyphosis, is an exaggerated concave lumbar curvature. It has similar origins, in that it may be because of a pre-existing condition, or poor posture. Postural changes due to an altered centre of gravity, such as in pregnancy or obesity may also cause lordosis and a change in vertebral alignment.
What are the treatment options?
Kyphosis can be treated with postural training, exercise, and back traction. More marked kyphosis however, may require surgery or back bracing, and in those cases exercise and back traction may be contra indicated. Advice from a qualified health practitioner will determine the severity of the condition. Treatment for lordosis is postural correction, changes in life style habits, exercise, and back traction when indicated.
How can Nubax Trio help with Kyphosis and Lordosis?
Whilst it is not recommended for use during the later stages of pregnancy, the Nubax Trio traction device can offer postural correction and pain relief caused by mild kyphosis and lordosis. By stretching the long muscles along a curved spine, a more neutral position can be achieved simply by utilising the bodyweight of the user and its unique lever action. Ask a qualified health practitioner if Nubax Trio is suitable for individual conditions.
